Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 Introduction

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 is a chemically treated, semi-solid pure petroleum bitumen. It is produced by blowing hot air into penetration-grade bitumen—typically 60/70—resulting in a thermally stable product with enhanced hardness, water resistance, and adhesion strength. The oxidation induces molecular changes, placing the material in the family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Due to its consistent performance and satisfactory thermal stability, this bitumen grade finds widespread application in harsh environments, especially in Uzbekistan and India.

Alternate Market Names: Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 has many other names in other industries and foreign markets. These are Air-Blown Bitumen 90/10, Blown Asphalt 90/10, Blown Bitumen 90/10, Oxidized Asphalt 90/10, and Air-Rectified Bitumen 90/10. Whether in various names or not, all names are for the same product produced by the air-blowing process with the same structure and performance characteristics.

What “90/10” Truly Represents

The “90/10” grade signifies two typical properties that describe the behavior of the material under specific conditions. The number 90 represents the softening point of the bitumen, i.e., it begins to soften at 90°C. The 10 is the penetration value in tenths of millimeter, which refers to the penetration depth of a standard needle into the surface under test conditions. The lower the penetration value of 10, the harder and more rigid the product. They are typically determined by the ASTM D36 method for softening point and ASTM D5 or IP49 for penetration.

Industrial and Commercial Uses

Blown Bitumen 90/10 has uses in a wide range of industries because it is versatile. It is one of the main materials used in the production of bitumen-based coatings, roofing sheets, and insulation membranes. It is a binding and waterproofing agent used in the chemical and paints industries.

It is also used in the production of lacquers, varnishes, and adhesives. It is utilized in pipe coatings during building construction, pavement sealing, road maintenance, civil construction, and waterproofing concrete structures and foundations. It is also used in dust control products, processing rubber and plastics, and paper or textile impregnation operations.

Characteristics and Performance

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 possesses good thermal resistance, melting stability, and high adhesion. It possesses a high softening point, which is best suited for application in hot weather or where bitumen must endure prolonged exposure to sunlight and heat. Its formulation also results in high water penetration resistance and aging, making it a durable choice for construction and industrial use.

Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 for Suitability for Harsh Conditions

The hardness and the high softening point of Oxidized Bitumen 90/10 are such that it is ideal for use in hot climatic zones and heavy-duty applications. It retains its structural strength at high loads and thermal stress, which is required for long-term service in infrastructure works such as bridge joints, highways, and industrial floors. It is also used as a base material in synthetic turf and hydraulic uses where adhesion and water resistance are imperative.

Safe Handling

Handling oxidized bitumen needs to be performed with caution due to the high temperature process involved in application. Heating should be done properly to avoid inhalation of potentially dangerous fumes. Workers need to wear proper personal protective gear, including heat-resistant gloves, long-sleeved shirts, safety boots, and protective glasses. Prevent exposure to fire or sparks because the product can release flammable vapors during heating to extremely high temperatures.

The maximum safe heat for heating is around 230°C. Thermal degradation, and in some cases, even fire hazard may occur by exceeding this value. Gradual and controlled heating must always be used to deliver uniform quality and safety.
