Understanding Cutback Bitumen SC-800

Cutback Bitumen SC-800 is a slow-curing (SC) asphalt product created by blending penetration-grade bitumen with a heavy distillate solvent, typically kerosene or gas oil, to reduce viscosity. The “800” is to its 800–1600 centistokes (cSt) kinematic viscosity range at 60°C, a higher viscosity than lower grades like SC-250, viscosity 250–500 cSt. Containing approximately 70% pure bitumen, SC-800 is manufactured to specifications like ASTM D2026M-15 with consistent quality for severe service. Its low rate of solvent evaporation provides extended workability, and it is especially ideal in applications where curing time isn’t of the essence.

Applications for SC-800

SC-800’s high viscosity and aggressive adhesion render it very versatile for a variety of construction applications:

Penetrating Prime Coats: SC-800 is often applied to prime non-asphalt base courses for paving. It penetrates aggressively, bonding loose aggregates together and creating a stable, watertight foundation for asphalt courses, extending road life.

Seal Coats and Surface Treatments: Being able to coat aggregates so well, SC-800 is ideal for seal coats, which give roads a smooth, hard finish protecting them from wear and the elements. It’s particularly well-suited for heavy traffic areas or hot climates where slower curing will give greater penetration.

Patching and Stockpile Mixes: SC-800 is a key component in cold-mix asphalt to be used for patching potholes or stockpile mix production to be used later. Being an adhesion product, it creates excellent bonding even during unfavorable conditions.

Dust Control and Road Stabilization: Being most commonly known as “road oil,” SC-800 is applied in dust control for unpaved roads as well as rural surface stabilization, offering a low-budget, all-weather option.

SC-800 vs. SC-250

While both SC-800 and SC-250 are slow-curing cutback bitumens, their viscosities and curing times differentiate them. SC-250, with lower viscosity (250–500 cSt) and 60% bitumen content, is more watery and has a quicker curing time and is appropriate for temperate climates or where penetration is required quickly, e.g., light prime coat or surface dressing.

On the other hand, SC-800’s higher viscosity and 70% bitumen content provide improved adhesion and durability, are more appropriate to hot climates or heavy usage situations where slow hardening allows deeper penetration and improved bonding. The choice between them depends on ambient condition, project size, and desired setting time.

Environmental regulations of some areas prohibit the use of cutback bitumen due to VOC emissions, and hence, read local regulations. Alternatives like bitumen emulsions can be replaced in restricted areas.
